the thesis
The
thesis is the culmination of your whole research programme. It stands
as both the public record and the measure of your thinking and your
research. It may never be widely read but it must be able to stand
up to rigorous academic criticism.
Note that here we are only concerned with thesis writing. If you
have to write essays and shorter papers as part of your coursework,
you should read Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 section 5,
and consult the list of references in Appendix 4. These sections
and some of the references which we list also deal with the related
problems of reading.
The
general problems of writing a thesis seem to be clear enough. They
include:
- Ordering
the material in a logical sequence,
- Developing
a clear prose style,
- Maintaining
a steady rate of production, often within a tight time schedule,
and
- Arranging
for the final typing, binding and formal presentation of the
completed work.
And,
through all this, you have to keep up your energy and
