Commonly, the mode of their [ research trainees'] research project, which was often government-commisioned, was partial, fragmented, mechanical, marginal, and over there were found very few among the trainee who had participated in a research project throughout its entire from the very beginning stage of conceptualization.: problem to the very end stage of report writing.
Them had been given the opportunity to understand the overall of the research project, let alone the task of formulating it. Most of them had been temporarily employed by the funding :agency or assigned by their superior to join the project as a research assistant playing the role or partial report writer. That kind of research experience made no significant contribution to improving capability.
Yet, as the supervisor knows, it is precisely this capacity for independent management of research project that is necessary for successful postgraduate studies.
And the first step in that project is getting down to the business.
Of defining a research proposal. This may take some time; refining and narrowing a general interest in an area down to a feasible research proposal. Your supervisor will help you in this process. He can make you aware of the advantages and disadvantages of different lines of research. He will ensure that what you propose is manageable and that it lies within the resources of the department.
