Language Problems

In this site we shall look first at the school background of Australian university students, which s hould give you some idea of the ways in which these students are prepared for tertiary study.

Academic staff assume

  1. That all their students have been through a reasonably common training in how to learn,
  2. That they have the necessary background for the subjects they choose to study, and
  3. That they are able to express their ideas well in writing and speech.

You may find it useful to compare the ways in which these students are encouraged to study with your own school experience.

We then move on to the particular demands which university study makes of all students, whether Australian or from overseas. final section of this chapter covers the further developments in styles of thinking and learning necessary for students continuing to Honours degree, and possibly from there to post graduate studies.

Australian students entering university have completed six years of secondary schooling. The schools they come from vary from public (government) day schools to private day or boarding schools, often . Estabhlished by different branches of the Christian church. Some schools follow a fairly rigid syllabus leading to a state-wide exam­-ination; others develop their own syllabuses and, in place of an external examination, assessment is conducted by the teachers themselves.

Most schools are well-equipped with libraries, science and lan­guage laboratories, and sporting facilities. The teachers are qualified specialists and are well paid. They are either trained in a three-year
