Problems
In
this site we shall look first at the school background of Australian
university students, which s hould give you some idea of the ways
in which these students are prepared for tertiary study.
Academic
staff assume
- That
all their students have been through a reasonably common training
in how to learn,
- That they
have the necessary background for the subjects they choose to
study, and
- That they
are able to express their ideas well in writing and speech.
You
may find it useful to compare the ways in which these students are
encouraged to study with your own school experience.
We
then move on to the particular demands which university study makes
of all students, whether Australian or from overseas. final section
of this chapter covers the further developments in styles of thinking
and learning necessary for students continuing to Honours degree,
and possibly from there to post graduate studies.

by different branches of the Christian church. Some schools follow
a fairly rigid syllabus leading to a state-wide exam-ination;

examination, assessment is conducted by the teachers themselves.
Most
schools are well-equipped with libraries, science and language
laboratories, and sporting facilities. The teachers are qualified
specialists and are well paid. They are either trained in a three-year
