Doctor of Philosophy

The final thesis is usually examined by two or more examiners from other universities, and the student may also be required to explain and defend his research in an oral examination conducted by these examiners.

Conclusion

In postgraduate work you are moving gradually away from the undergraduate situation of being taught by someone else to becoming your own teacher. Every postgraduate who is writing a thesis or undertaking research is assigned to a supervisor (or a group of s upervisors). Nevertheless, by the time you are a doctoral student, you may be working in an entirely new area of research in which you are, in a sense, ‘more expert' than your supervisor. At this point your supervisor can only offer you general guidance and you must assume independent responsibility for the progress and fi ndings of your own research.

In the next two chapters we shall look in more detail at the role of the supervisor in relation to the graduate student, and then at the strategies which many g raduates use while working their way through their Master's and PhD programmes.
