Doctor of Philosophy
Entry to a PhD course is normally restricted to those who have completed a Master's degree or have gained a high level of distinction in their Honours year. Once again, practice varies among Faculties: in Arts Faculties Honours graduates usually proceed to a Master's degree before they tackle the PhD, whereas in
Science Faculties the best Honours students more commonly continue directly to the PhD. Overseas students, if they lack specific research skill or background knowledge, may be required to complete a Master's course before being considered eligible for PhD studies.
The PhD in Australia is a research degree and is only offered at universities. Doctoral students are expected to work independently, with minimal oversight by a supervisor, on their own research projects or topics and must finally present their finings in substantial thesis. The thesis should be of a quality worthy of publication in an international journal of the discipline. It must be written in English. Most students take at least three years to complete their PhD and
