Science Faculties the best Honours students more commonly continue directly to the PhD. Overseas students, if they lack specific research skill or background knowledge, may be required to complete a Master's course before being considered eligible for PhD studies.

The PhD in Australia is a research degree and is only offered at universities. Doctoral students are expected to work independently, with minimal oversight by a supervisor, on their own research projects or topics and must finally present their finings in substantial ­thesis.
