Academic Disciplines As Sub-Cultures : The Need To Adapt

Summary

We have looked at the styles of teaching and learning used in secondary school - the background training common to most undergraduates. The central section of this chapter covers the changes which are necessary when a student moves to undergraduate studies. these­ include:

  1. Emphasis on independence and self-reliance in studying the need to make efficient use of learning resource , lectures, tutorials and labs, libraries, and staff, development of critical thinking and the ability to present ideas effectively, and
  2. The need to adapt to the differing demands of different discriplines.
